Words That Matter

(2 Timothy 1:13, CSB)

Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

In the Christian church we use words that have specific meanings that don’t change, due to their special use. These words are important to our understanding of God’s word and to clearly expressing what He says.

“Grace” is undeserved and unmerited love.  It is God’s love toward us, not because we have been good or otherwise deserved it, but because He is merciful and loving.

We do not earn what God gives – forgiveness, eternal life, and salvation – but He gives it purely out of mercy.

This grace is not without cost, however, for God’s justice must be satisfied. The key to understanding God’s grace is to learn that Jesus satisfied God’s justice for us, so that He is at the same time both loving and just.
